Finally, a marriage book for men. Worth your time and money.

My wife is always after me to read another marriage self-help book and it drives me nuts. I’m glad I finally found one that was worth my time!

I appreciated how straight-forward this book was. It was easy to read, and the tips are easy to follow. I also appreciated that this book wasn’t dry and boring, as these texts tend to be. Some parts of it were actually funny. I wouldn’t mind reading more by this gal. She and her husband sound like an interesting couple.

My only real complaint about the book was that there’s almost too much information in here. Especially for men like me, who’ve been taught to “man up” our whole lives. She’s implies we have another option, and that we don’t have to remain stuck in a dead-end job when we’re unhappy. That’s fine if your kids are already in college, but for those of us who still have kids at home and are in a more traditional marriage, it’s not that simple. But my father died a couple of years ago, so this has all been on my mind anyway. After reading this book, I feel like it’s finally time to do something about it.

That’s what happened to the author. After her mom died, she went about making some major changes to her life, and I respect that. It’s hard for me to take advice from someone who hasn’t been through it on their own.

In closing, I talked to my wife about some of these topics and we’re working on ways for me to get some more time with my buddies. I’ve been trying to do that for years, but something always got in the way. Wish I’d had this book when I was younger.

Im almost 60 years old and this book finally opened my eyes! Just a few hours ago I was crying because I don’t feel respected, loved or equal to my husband or anyone else who didn’t respond positively to me. Reading this book made me realize I was letting everyone around me determine how I would feel about myself when I was with them!! How sad! I was raised in a loveless, critical home and what I recognize now is I left there looking for someone to give that to me! But in a world full of imperfect people with their own needs and shortcomings...what a crapshoot to give that power to whomever crossed my path. If you want to understand what “loving yourself means, READ THIS BOOK!!
I thought I was headed for divorce until I found this book, but now I’m wondering if my husband and I might still have a chance. There’s just too much that’s gone on between us and I didn’t think I could ever forgive him. But this book got me thinking about everything in a different light. It made me think about my role in everything, and what I want out of my marriage. That’s been an eye opener, especially for someone who was raised in a traditional family like me. I’ve been putting my needs on the backburner for years, but I’m realizing it’s time to change that.

I was surprised when my friend recommended this book, because she’s divorced. But she knows the author somehow and recommended her as a person. So I gave it a shot, and I liked what I found.

I’ve read through the book once, and I’m going to read it again. This time around, I’m going to make more time to do more of the exercises. The mood in my house is already better, which is saying a lot.

UPDATE March 7, 2015 This book has really saved my marriage! It's a short read packed with useful information, and I highly, highly recommend it! If it saved my marriage, I'm sure it can save yours, too.
I was hoping this book would be good, but it was even better than I expected! I've read a lot of marriage self-help books over the years and so far, this one's my favorite. There were a couple of sections the author could have expanded on, but other than that, the book was really good. As soon as I downloaded it, I put a few of the tips into play and I can already see a difference in my relationship with my husband. She also gave me lots of tools around the bigger issues that we're always arguing about, so I feel like I have a pretty good game plan from here on out.

These are the steps

Step 1 Figure Out What Makes You Resentful

Step 2 Learn When to Say Yes and When to Say No

Step 3 Honor Who You Are and Where You Came From

Step 4 Figure Out What Makes You Happy

Step 5 Reframe and Retrain Your Brain

Step 6 Communicate More Clearly and Effectively

Step 7 Learn How to Have Fun Again

Step 8 Decide What Kind of Marriage You Want to Have

Step 9 Decide What Kind of Life You Want to Have

Personally, I found Steps 3 and 5 most helpful, because they helped me gain a real clarity around the big, recurring issues in my marriage. I never thought it could be so easy to change some of these patterns! Then, once I got closer to the end of the book, Steps 8 & 9 pulled everything together. I wasn't expecting it, but this book is already turning into a game changer.

What I liked

· The writing was clear and easy to follow. I appreciated how clearly she outlined the issues, then showed me what I could do about them. It was a nice break from books that go on and on without actually giving you any useful information.

· Super-helpful tips for changing the status quo--and there were lots of them! They made the process feel actually achievable.

· Each step is interspersed with personal stories, which helped me feel like I wasn't alone in my predicament.

· There's a big section on how the past affects the present. I found myself resisting this at first, but as I went deeper and explored my own family roots, I was shocked at the patterns I found and how directly they correlated to the problems in my current marriage.

· I liked that the book was addressed to both men and women. A lot of these books are so touchy-feeling that I can't get my husband to read them, but this time, he was open to reading a few sections alongside me. I think the humor helped.

(This book is about marriage and she doesn't say it, but you can use a lot of these tips and techniques to better understand the other relationships in your life, too.)

What I didn't like

· I wish she'd included more information in Step 5, the chapter about rebooting your brain. It was really interesting to read about brain chemistry and its role in resentment, and it made me want to read another book on the subject.

Overall, it's a great little book. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone struggling with their resentment. It's already helped me!
